This is me, in my house in El Rito in 1967. My mansion was a grand two-story, 14 room adobe next door to the Catholic church. It served as a counterculture hotel of sorts for about a year, though nobody ever paid rent. It had round, white columns all across the front holding up the roof over a long covered porch. A tenant painted blue stars on the white columns. The place had the local name “Sargent’s. Locals told me it was owned by a professional gambler named Sargent who had departed to Las Vegas, NV years before. I got permission to live in it from EL Rito’s storekeeper and biggest local patron, Dennis Garcia. In this photo I’m standing in a dormer window in a huge, wallpapered room on the second floor. Alan Klein’s house was directly across the road.
